Feed concentration is one of the most under-rated levers in a spray drying machine. It sets how much water you must evaporate, which in turn drives energy use, throughput and final powder quality. In flavor powder production, a small change in solids can swing viscosity, droplet formation and aroma retention.
Operators often chase temperature and atomizer speed while overlooking the feed itself. Yet the solids content quietly decides the thermal load, the residence time and how tightly the flavour is bound in the finished particle. To make one kilogram of powder at X percent solids you must evaporate roughly (100/X minus one) kilograms of water. At 30 percent solids that is about 2.3 kg of water per kg of powder; at 50 percent it falls to just 1 kg.
That single ratio fixes the thermal load, the required evaporation capacity and, indirectly, the residence time in the tower. Higher solids mean less water to remove, so the unit runs cooler and faster for the same powder output.
It also changes the energy bill. Every extra kilogram of water that must be evaporated increases fuel or electricity use, which compounds across a full production year.
Higher solids raise viscosity. Above a practical ceiling the feed will not atomize cleanly, so droplets grow and drying becomes uneven.
Dilute feeds atomize easily but produce more fines, more dust loss and a wider particle size distribution, which complicates recovery and packing.

More water means longer drying and more heat exposure, and volatile top notes are the first casualty. Lower solids also dilute the encapsulation matrix, so aroma is held less tightly and fades faster in storage.
Running at the highest solids your atomizer can handle shortens residence time and protects both flavour and colour. The trade-off is viscosity, which is why the ceiling must be found by trial rather than assumed.
Target the highest viscosity the atomizer can still handle with margin, then fine-tune against aroma retention and yield data from real production runs.
